Mexico meets Scotland...

"We chose Sailor and Scout after seeing some of Maddy's designs on Rock My Wedding's Instagram feed - her watercolour style and calligraphy were exactly what we were after, it gave our stationery a soft and informal look, but still very personal."

As soon as the then bride-to-be Paulina contacted me to see if I could design something bespoke for her wedding, I knew I wanted to get involved!

Paulina has a Mexican heritage and she wanted to reflect that in her wedding to Scottish-born Gavin, here in Blighty. Scotland? Mexico? London? Yes yes yes!

This combination of influences sounded really unique and special, and so I jumped at the chance to create their wedding stationery, based on traditional Mexican Otomi art. These hand painted illustrations of rabbits, dogs, birds and flowers are whimsical and enchanting, brought up to date on crisp, clean white paper and with cool lower case type.

"We are a Mexican and Scottish couple who live in London, and our wedding was in London, so the wedding invitations were essential to highlight our backgrounds. We chose a Mexican design called 'Otomi' or 'Tenango', drawn in Scottish blue. Maddy's watercolour style really brought to life and made it quite unique. The way the different elements of the design were brought to life across the table settings and menus was spot on - the rabbit and the peacock were my personal favourites. And her calligraphy for not the invitation envelopes and place names rounded everything up, it looked so elegant yet simple, exactly what we wanted."

From the initial invitation design I went on to create concertina fold-out information booklets, menus, brush calligraphy name cards, pictorial table numbers and a table plan. Everything came together beautifully on the day at the charming Tap on the Line pub in Kew, with long communal tables loaded with a jaw dropping combination of colourful flowers, thistles, Mexican paper garlands and Scottish whiskey.

"We obviously loved it, but our guests were incredibly impressed. Our Mexican guests loved how we made the Otomi design our own! And many of our guests kept the place names and menus. One of our guests has framed her invitation envelope as she said it was the most beautiful way her name and her husbands had ever been written... We can't say anything but positive about our stationery, Maddy absolutely understood our vision from the get go and we loved how it all looked in the end."
